Lots of stuff to explain!! first, a "calaverita" or more properly "calaverita de azucar" its a typical Mexican treat for the day of the death "dia de muertos" its made of sugar and usually has the name of the people you ae going to give it written on the top, they are also made from chocolate calaveritas de azucar.
And the Wise men day or "dia de Reyes" its january 6 the kids on some parts of Mexico usually get their Xmas gifts on "día de Reyes" they are brought by the 3 wise men [link] instead of Santa Claus.
So as you can guess this strip was originally a "day of the death" strip
BTW.-The names on the Calaveritas are the names of characters with whom I share the newspaper with
